Caiques are commonly available in two species, either the white-bellied or black-headed..
Black-headed Caique (Pionites melanocephala) - two subspecies. Length 9 inches
origin:- North of the Amazon River from Guiana on the Atlantic to eastern Ecuador
in the west and northern Peru in the south.
White-bellied Caique (Pionites leucogaster) - three subspecies. Length 9 inches.
Origin:- South of the Amazon River from northern Bolivia, eastern Ecuador, and
eastern Peru eastward to the Atlantic.
Caiques are lively, busy birds, highly entertaining as companions and real clowns.
They are small, beautiful, exciting and have unusual personalities. They can be messy and very strong-willed! Behaviourally, Caiques are among the most fascinating of parrots. They display and vocalise loudly at the slightest provocation, in a shrill penetrating voice.
Diet:- The diet of these birds does not differ greatly from other parrots. A good quality mixture of seeds, large quantities of fresh corn on the cob, other vegetables and fruits, a mixture of wholemeal bread, grated carrot and endive. Caiques are extremely fond of fruit and need more than other parrots. They usually relish cracked walnuts and cubes of cheese, (don't over do the cheese!)
