There are 27 different Amazon species known in aviculture, it would be impossible to list every one! Here we will cover the more known species commonly kept as pet companions. The average life span is 50 - 70 years

Bluefronted Amazon (Amazona aestiva) - two subspecies. 15 inches. The Bluefronted Amazon is found in large parts of Brazil.

Orange Winged Amazon (Amazona amazonica) - three subspecies. 13 inches. The Orange Winged Amazon can be found in all of northern south America with the exception of the Andes region.

Mealy Amazon (Amazonia farinosa) - five subspecies. 15 to 16 inches. The Mealy Amazon originates from Mexico to the Atlantic coast in Southern Brazil; also northwestern South America

Yellow-Fronted or yellow crowned Amazon (Amazona ochrocephala) - nine subspecies including the Double yellow headed Amazon and Yellow naped Amazon. The Average length is 14 inches but can vary in some subspecies. These Amazons can be found in areas of South America, from Guiana and Venezuela in the east to the Colombian Andes in the west, also Trinidad.

Diet :- Amazons will eat a varied diet and are not usually fussy eaters. They are prone to obesity so always include lots of non fattening foods in their diet. They will eat pellets or seed as well as pulses, again allow for vitamin supplements.

Fresh fruit and Vegetables:- Carrot, Green Beans, Kale, Watercress, Mangetout, Fresh peas, Corn on the cob, Spinach, Bell peppers, sugar snap peas, Pumpkin, celery and sprouts. Fruits are widely accepted, Apple, Orange, Lychees, grapes, pear and again, the most popular..the pomegranate!

Amazons as Pets

Amazons are popular pets with extrovert personalities, they can be friendly, are good mimics, clever and entertaining. One big drawback is usually noise!! Yes, Amazons are not known for being quiet! Females tend to be more placid than the males. You do have to watch out for their behavior changes during the breeding season, even the most friendly Amazon can bite during this time.
