African Greys (Psittacus erithacus) 13/14 inches in size Timneh Greys (P.e. erithacus) 11/12 inches in size
Origin:-The nominate race inhabits a wide area of Western central Africa;
the
Timneh occurs in Liberia and the Ivory Coast, sierra Leone and Southern Guinea.
Greys are famed for their mimicry and is probably one of the most popular parrots
kept as pets. Average life span can be up to 60 years.
Diet :-Pellets, seed, (avoid too much sunflower seed) greys easily become sunflower seed junkies! Greys on a seed diet must have a calcium supplement and a Vitamin D3 additive.
Fresh
fruit and vegetables should always be on offer daily, these can include:
Kale, Broccoli, Spinach, spinach beet, Carrot, red bell
peppers, tomato, green beans, celery and corn on the cob, fresh peas in the
pod, beet root, and pumpkin.
Friuts can include, Apple, Orange, Grapes, banana, Lychee's, and the all time
favorite of all parrots, Pomegrannites.
Other foods :- Pulses are also a good source of vitamins, soaked and flavored with some favorite foods make an ideal meal. We should also not forget the use of berries, Hawthorns berries are highly nutritious and loved by most parrots.
Greys as pets:- Like with all parrot companions there are advantages and disadvantages. On the positive side, Greys are not usually noisy, they are highly intelligent, excellent mimics and can develop very strong bonds with their owners. On the negative side, Greys can have nervous temperaments, they can be difficult for the inexperienced keeper, Greys can be shy with people they do not know and can have a tendency to feather pluck if not given enough attention.
