Budgies

Budgies are inexpensive to buy, easy to obtain, inexpensive to keep. They tame readily when young, are entertaining and intelligent. Ideal for children and grown-ups alike.

Native Origins:- Australia

Budgies are the smallest members of the parrot family. They have an attractive natural chatter, are good mimics and can become talented talkers.

Lifespan/Size:- Size up to 7 inches. A Budgies average life span is 7 - 10 years, although some individuals may well live into their teens.

Diet:- Budgies are happy on a diet of good quality canary seed, white millet and hulled oats (oat groats) as well as panicum millet sprays. Don't overdo the millet, Budgies take such delight in picking seeds off the sprays, that they may ignore the seeds in their feeder, and not get the balanced diet you have so carefully provided. Do give them a few greens - well washed of course, but not too many that they get the runs.

Cuttlefish is an important source of calcium for your Budgie, but there is another good reason for clipping a cuttlefish bone to the side of the cage. It will help to keep your bird's beak in trim.

Suitability as Pets:- Budgies make wonderful pets whether your busy life means complicated bird husbandry is out of the question or you have time on your hands. These friendly little Aussie Parakeets have been with us so long, that we can easily fail to recognise them for the exotic creatures they are. Their brilliant plumage comes in a great array of colours, bright yellow is the most common, but sky blue first appeared way back in the 1870's, and the green range of Budgies now includes dark green and olive.
