Living With Parrots

By Jan & Keith Dicker

My first meeting with a parrot was when Iwas about 10 years old, we were on holiday and we went to a little fishing village called Polperro in Cornwall, their was a man there, he had a parrot and he would take your photo with it, my sister and I had ours taken. At the time I had no idea it was a Blue and Gold Macaw, but I fell in love with it, not knowing how long I would have to wait before I had my own parrot.

In August 2002 we got our first parrot, which we had help in choosing from Parrot Passion members, it was a Blue Headed Pionus which we got from a member to be, we called him Twiglet. He made himself at home immediately, he loved to play (break ornaments) and to be with us where ever we went. In February 2003 he was not himself, so we took him to an avian vet and he was diagnosed with aspergillosis, two days later he lost his fight for life and we were both devastated.

The house seemed so empty without him, but in April 2003 we heard that another member had some baby Senegal's, so after a lot of talking we decided to have one. home came Skittles, then in September to complete the family we got a Maxi Pionus from the same lady we had Twiglet from, we called him Perry.

The house is no longer quiet, not with a Sennie in it and a Maxi that is trying to be as loud as she is.

One day though we will add another Blue Head to our family.
