Pionus Parrots make wonderful pets, they are often overlooked for the larger parrots. Pionus are a genus of small to medium-sized parrots from South and central America. Often referred to as the smaller Amazon without all the noise! There are eight Species of Pionus, but only five of the Species are generally kept as pets.

We have two Pionus as Pets, Bobby our Blueheaded Pionus and Oscar our Maximillian Pionus, both are wonderful companions. We have shared our home with Pionus for many years and have come to know how important 'body language' is to any Pionus. Sharing your home with any of the Pionus Parrots means learning this body language and being able to interpret the meanings!

The Information contained within this section is based upon our own experience, research, and the views we have gained from many Pionus Owners, both in the UK , Canada and America.

A special thank you must go to Rosemary Low, Britain's renown aviculturist who answered many of our queries in the early days. When we knew so little about Pionus Parrots, and did not even have access to a computer, she provided so much Information which proved Invaluable.

Further Credit must also go to our 'American Pi Family' at the 'Up At Six Pi Chat', always helpful, supportive and great fun! Many of the Pionus Photos are Courtesy of our fellow Pionus owners from 'Pi Chat' Other photos from Parrot Passions UK Members and personal Images.

Also from 'across the pond' Ray Dorge and Gail Sibley, breeders of Maximillian Pionus and Senegal's'. Ray's article "Perky Pionus" published in the Parrot magazine brought us a wealth of Information and further advice via e-mail.

Greg Glendell, we owe him a debt of gratitude for his help when Bobby was ill, we were inexperienced, and telephoned Greg out of sheer desperation, although Bobby had been to see a vet, he was not getting any better, the vet was not an avian vet and was treating Bobby for a Crop Inflammation, when he was suffering from Heavy metal Poisoning. Greg was a friendly voice on the other side of a telephone, his advice was to find the nearest avian vet and take Bobby immediately. We followed Greg's advice and found a wonderful vet by the name of DR Roy A.Earle, within days Bobby was hospitalized and made a full recovery.
