Now You Are Home

The day has finally arrived........you are bringing your parrot home! It is a time of excitement for you and your family. You have bought the cage, toys and equipment you need and now you finally have the parrot you have been waiting for. Whether you have a hand reared baby bird or an older previously owned bird, he will need to settle into his new home too.
So, what now, you might ask yourself?
It is so tempting to rush things, handle the parrot, introduce him to all the family members, but just stop and think.....the parrot needs time, time to adjust, time to get used to you and his new environment. Give your bird that time, allow him to settle in.
Place your new bird in his cage, make sure he already has fresh food and water available, perhaps a couple of toys. Don't over load the cage with toys, some birds are frightened by new objects and this can increase his stress.
Later on you may want to try to offer him some food by hand, this is fine, but if he doesn't feel comfortable with you doing so, don't force the issue. It is very early days. Sit by the cage, talk to him softly, birds often feel more comfortable hearing a gentle voice.
Some birds may already be tame and want attention, others may not be so trusting of humans yet. Getting to know one another is all part of the fun you will share.
All birds are not the same and each one may react differently when you bring them home, allow your bird to dictate the pace, never rush anything, hopefully you and your parrot will have many years together, time, love and patience will build up a close bond that you can share for the rest of your lives.
