Cleaning Regime

Regular cleaning of cages, equipment and toys are essential for the health and well being of your bird. Many cages have a pull out tray to make the task easier. Most people generally use newspaper as a liner for the base of the cage. This needs to be changed daily.

Good hygiene should be a matter of routine. Remove droppings from perches as soon as they appear, this is far easier than leaving them to set and you end up scrapping the perches to get them clean.

Food and water bowls should be cleaned at least once a day. Pay attention to water bowls especially, water can become contaminated with droppings or food. You may need to change the water several times a day!

There are various cleaning products now available such as those offered by the 'Birdcare Company' to aid you. You will require a safe disinfectant to keep your birds cage clean and free from bacteria that can form if left over food particles are not removed.

Many cages come with a storage shelf beneath, this is ideal to store all your cleaning products that you will use on a regular basis.

Besides your regular daily clean up you should do a thorough clean up once a week. This may involve walls, cages, any play equipment and toys. You will need to remove the cage from the area and remove all toys and perches. Scrub perches clean with an appropriate solution and cage bars. Some steam cleaners are extremely useful for the 'big clean' and can cut your work time in half!

Some items you will find useful to you can be as simple as old towels, paper towels, spray misters, scrubbing brush and a hand held vacum.

This routine may seem a lot of hard work, but your daily clean will lessen the mess and once you have developed the routine that suits you and your bird it will become second nature. Caring for your bird needs to become part of your daily routine.
