Avian Vet Checks

Hopefully when you decided to buy your first parrot you will have already located your nearest Avian Vet and registered with the practice.

Avian Vets are like goldust and you may find you will have to travel quite a distance to take your bird. Regular check ups are important, this cannot be emphasised enough. Birds are extremely good at hiding any illness and by the time you notice anything is wrong, it could well be too late for your bird to be treated and saved.

Normally, providing your bird is in good health you should be prepared to take your bird for a yearly check up. Remember your vet will rely on your observations of your birds behaviour and health as much as any tests he may carry out. If you have any concerns this is your chance to air them, no matter how small. You can also use this visit as an opportunity to ask your vet general care and diet advice.

If you have not already located your nearest avian vet, search on our avian vets page, you will find 54 vets listed within the UK. Once you have chosen your nearest vet, telephone and register with the practice. Make an appointment to take your bird, take all relevant papers or documents with you on your first visit so your vet may build up a history and profile of your parrot.

Always keep your vet's telephone number handy, so you will not have to waste precious time searching for the details in an emergency. Besides you and your family, your avian vet is the most important person in your parrots life.
