Psittacosis

Psittacosis - also known as Chlamydiosis - is caused by a bacteria. This bacteria causes a disease something like a really serious flu, affecting the breathing or digestive systems.

The symptons are flu-like, generally with a high temperature and fever along with weight loss due to liver disease, anorexia, hypothermia, lethargy, and yellowish-green gelatinous droppings. When infected, the birds suffer through severe depression that can eventually lead to death in as many as 40% of cases.

Psittacosis infects birds of any age and size. This disease can also be transferred from birds to humans. The use of the antibiotic Tetracycline effects a rapid recovery in most humans ( except perhaps the elderly), provided that the disease is diagnosed early.

If the disease is detected early in birds, it can be effectively treated with antibiotics. Psittacosis is a serious killer of pet birds, but doesn't have to be. The key to effective treatment is early diagnosis. This could save your birds live.

If you have been in close contact with an infected bird with Psittacosis contact your doctor for more information.
